A pedestrian has died in a hit-and-run in Sydney.

Police are searching for a motorist who killed a female pedestrian in a hit-and-run in Sydney's south-west.

Police were called to Henry Lawson Drive at Milperra where they found the struck woman following reports of a crash, shortly after 4:30am Sunday.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and tried to resuscitate the victim, but she could not be saved.

Police believe an older model white Toyota ute with a refrigeration unit in the rear tray hit the woman.

The ute lost a side mirror as a result of the collision, police said.

The driver fled the scene and was last seen travelling south on Henry Lawson Drive.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
