Concerning vision has surfaced of a whale stranded on a sand bar on the Gold Coast.

The mammal is stuck near Peel Island in Morton Bay off the Brisbane coast, Channel Nine reports.

Rescue crews are said on be on their way to help the struggling animal.

The rescue effort follows controversy over the burial of a humpback whale that is thought to have died after becoming entangled in fishing nets in NSW.

The 20-tonne humpback, which is believed to have died from exhaustion, was buried on the beach after attempts to tow the carcass out to sea failed.
