A 15-year-old boy is "on life support" after he dropped a 100kg weights bar on his throat while working out alone at a PCYC gym near Brisbane.

The boy, Ben Shaw, was taken to Brisbane's Lady Cilento Hospital in a critical condition after he was found at the Pine Rivers gym. First aid was administered at the scene when Shaw was discovered. He was transported to hospital on Tuesday night.

Sharon Hickey, the president of the Pine Central Holy Spirit rugby league club, said on Wednesday evening that Shaw was on "life support".

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Benjamin Shaw, one of our U15Div2 players who was in a serious incident at PCYC gym late yesterday," she said.

"He is currently on life support fighting for his life at Lady Cilento ... please take a minute and say a prayer for him and his family."

PCYC Pine Rivers says the incident is "extremely distressing".

"A serious incident occurred at PCYC Pine Rivers branch on Tuesday night," the organisation said. "A young man was very seriously injured while exercising at the gym there.

"This is a terrible incident and everyone here at PCYC Queensland has been impacted by it. The news is extremely distressing.

"Our hearts go out to his family and friends, and the wider community and we are offering counselling and ongoing support to anyone impacted by this, and will continue to do so."
