Marilou Danley has been cleared as a person of interest in the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history. But police still want to talk to her.

Authorities are hoping to speak to the Australian girlfriend of Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock, in a bid to determine his motives in executing the worst mass shooting in recent U.S. history.

Police were searching for former Gold Coast resident Marilou Danley, 62, in the immediate aftermath of the attack, in which 59 people were killed and more than 500 wounded.

An alert was issued for Danley on Tuesday, with police saying in a statement they had made contact with her and did not believe she is involved with the shooting.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Joe Lombardo later said Danley, who is understood to be in the Phillippines, she would be interviewed when she returned to the U.S.

Who is Marilou Danley?

Danley is a former Gold Coast resident who has been living in the U.S. for about 20 years. It is understood she is currently in the Philippines.

It's believed Paddock, who was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, may have used some of Danley's identification after checking into the hotel.

Danley lived on the Gold Coast for several years with her former husband, an Australian man.

Danley's sister, Liza Werner, who still lives on the Gold Coast, declined to comment to the Gold Coast Bulletin.

A visibly shocked Eric Paddock, 55, said he was "horrified" and "dumbfounded" after hearing news about his older brother's murderous rampage.

He described Danley as a "nice lady."

"I've met her three or four times," he said.

"She's got a Facebook page. She sends cookies to my mom."

A neighbour described Danley as "very quiet," and it is believed she had worked for the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa between 2010 and 2013.

Eric Paddock told the Washington Posthis brother was "just a guy who played video poker and took cruises and ate burritos at Taco Bell."

"There's no political affiliation that we know of. There's no religious affiliation that we know of."

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said there there are no reports of Australians killed or injured in the attack.

Paddock was living out his retirement in a quiet town of Mesquite, outside Las Vegas, and frequented casinos and concerts.

Police on Tuesday said they found 18 guns in his Mesquite home, on top of the 16 found in the hotel room.

Neighbour Diane McKay described Paddock as "weird," as well as small and in pretty good shape.

"Kept to himself," McKay, 79, said.

"It was like living next to nothing. . . . You can at least be grumpy, something. He was just nothing, quiet. He never went out in the back and enjoyed the backyard, nature," she said.

"They had a little back yard, 17 feet to the fence and hill. But the blinds were always closed."
