Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has been stripped of his Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences membership.

The Academy made the decision to renounce the membership of Weinstein, who has been accused of sexual misconduct dating back decades, at an emergency board meeting in Beverly Hills on Saturday local time, Vanity Fair reports.

"We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over," Vanity Fair quotes the Academy as saying.

Actresses Ashley Judd, Angelina Jolie, and Gwyneth Paltrow have come out in recent weeks recently accusing Weinstein of sexual harassment or sexual assault.

Weinstein is currently seeking treatment in Arizona at a rehab facility and has denied any non-consensual sexual conduct with any women.

The crisis meeting of the Oscars board that includes Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Whoopi Goldberg witnessed an overwhelming majority vote to oust the Hollywood heavyweight.

It's an action that the board of governors has never taken before, breaking 90 years of tradition.
