A teenage cricket umpire was allegedly beaten up for asking a man to stop drinking alcohol at a junior match in Melbourne.
The 15-year-old was allegedly headbutted, punched and verbally abused on the sidelines of an under-11s match on Friday.
Police were called to a sports reserve at Sunshine North about 7pm after reports of an assault at the suburban game between Sunshine and Caroline Springs.
The teen was taken to hospital and later released while police interviewed witnesses.
It is understood the adolescent umpire told a man who was drinking alcohol in the clubrooms that the consumption of liquor was banned at junior cricket games.
The man, understood to be a senior cricketer for Sunshine, allegedly verbally abused the boy and chased him outside where he headbutted and punched the teen.
Sports Minister John Eren described the man's behaviour as "intolerable".
"The perpetrator of the alleged incident should be brought to justice," he told reporters on Monday.
"When are people going to learn this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated?
"The codes of all different sports are taking action on this very important issue."
The teen umpires junior matches as a part-time job and plays for Caroline Springs' under-17 team, AAP has been told.
Club president Steve Collins, who was called to the ground, urged for restraint in response to the off-field clash.
"We do ask that any concerned members of the club direct any questions to myself or the committee and not look to social media to comment," Mr Collins posted on the club's Facebook page on Saturday.
"We do not want to drop to the low standards of others.
"We would also like to thank the parents that were present at the incident for remaining calm and ensuring the safety of our junior players."
Police are investigating the matter and as of mid-afternoon Monday, no charges had been laid.
The Western Regional Junior Cricket Association confirmed the incident but declined to comment.
The Sunshine Cricket Club has also been contacted for a response.
In August, a 40-year-old Truganina man was charged with affray and two counts of assault for allegedly attacking an umpire at an under-15 Australian rules grand final in southwest Melbourne.
