Teen Dies At Lambton, Newcastle Pool From Being Restrained After Alleged Assault

Police said the incident was subject to an "independent review".

Police are calling for witnesses after a teenage boy died following an incident at a public pool in Newcastle.

The 17-year-old had allegedly assaulted an employee at Lambton Pool just after 5pm on Tuesday and had to be restrained by witnesses until police arrived.

The teenager required treatment by paramedics and was taken to John Hunter Hospital, where he later died.

NSW police have not commented further on the nature of the teen's injuries but say a critical incident investigation has been launched and it will be subject to an independent review.

Witnesses to the incident are being urged to come forward.

The Lambton Pool website said on Wednesday morning the facility would be closed until further notice due to "unforeseen circumstances" but it's expected to reopen later in the day, a pool spokeswoman told AAP.
