Police have shot a man dead in Adelaide.

A siege in Adelaide has ended with the death of a 24-year-old man who was fatally shot by police overnight.

The man was killed during a confrontation with officers at a motel in Glen Osmond in the South Australian capital's inner south-east.

The man was wanted over an alleged hit-and-run on Friday night at Mitchell Park where a police officer was struck after trying to stop a vehicle, the ABC reports.

When police arrived at the motel on Saturday, they discovered an armed man in one of the rooms.

"A short time after that they heard what they believed to be two gun shots," Assistant Commissioner Noel Bamford told reporters.

Police say they opened fire on the man when he pointed a gun at them, Channel Seven reports.
