A surfer has been rushed to hospital after being bitten by a shark on the NSW north coast.

The 31-year-old man was surfing at Birubi Beach near Port Stephens when he was bitten on the foot by what he described to be a shark, about 9.30am Saturday, police said.

The injured surfer managed to swim to shore and call emergency services.

Police said the surfer was treated at the beach by NSW Ambulance Paramedics then taken to John Hunter Hospital with puncture wounds to his foot.

The injury is reportedly not life threatening.

Authorities have closed Birubi Beach as a precaution.

More to come.
