Heath Pickering is Deputy Editor at Election Watch, a University of Melbourne project providing independent coverage of the 2016 federal election. He is also working as a researcher on Vote Compass, a civic engagement tool that shows how voters’ views align with political party policies. He bridges academia and journalism and is based at Melbourne School of Government.
In Australia, federal elections must be held every three years while, globally, 90 percent of countries have four or five-year terms. This statistical anomaly is a hangover from federation. But there's not likely to be change any time soon.
