I am in love with travel. Honestly, everything about the experience fills me with joy. I love the sites, the sounds, the transportation and the fumbling of maps. If I could spend every waking moment of my time just traveling around the world and exploring new destinations, I probably would. Unfortunately, life often gets in the way and I can't travel as much as I want to. After a three year stint of traveling around Asia and Oceania, I am committing to spending some time back home. The travel bug is always biting at my ankles so when designing my new room, I thought that I would do everything in my power to make it a place that feeds my wanderlust. Here's how I did it and how you can do it too!

I Utilized My Souvenirs

Lucky for me, I have been collecting souvenirs and sending them back home all throughout my travels. I have hand-sewn pillow cases from Vietnam, colorful tea lights from Thailand and an array of intricate tea cups from China. There is my tapestries from Bali and cloth maps from Taiwan. I have the mugs that I got from a garden in Munich and chopsticks that I picked up in Japan. Whatever souvenir I had, I somehow found a way to utilize it when decorating. Now, when I look around my room, I can remember all of the great times I had while abroad.

I Kept Some of The Culture

In bringing back knick knacks from other countries, I also tried to utilize some of my items to bring a sense of culture back into my room. I have the dice game that I picked up while living in China and often teach friends how to play it when they come over for a gathering. I have my Spanish and Chinese language books that I keep on my book shelf and often study from when I have free time too. With my laptop, I frequently look up songs that I heard while living in other countries and play them when I want to feel nostalgic. And, I keep a stock of Chinese tea and use the tea cups that I brought back when I want to relive one of my favorite pastimes in China.

I Got Hotel Grade Comforts

Part of the reason I love travel so much is that I get to stay in hotels. Even though some people hate hotels, I have to say that I love them and look forward to staying in one no matter which destination I visit. From room service and jumping on the bed to the little mini products in the bathroom; I can't help but indulge in how comfy each room is. So, I invested in a quality mattress and bed so that I could get hotel grade sleep every night. I even made sure to choose an apartment that had a view of something interesting from the bedroom as most hotels do. Now, every morning I get to wake up and look out over the city of Philadelphia with as much admiration as if I was a tourist.

Travel Themed Everything

OK, I am a sucker for anything travel themed. So, I basically designed my entire room around anything related to a map, an airplane or a globe. Call it what you will but I thoroughly enjoy my world map bed spread, suitcase shaped storage containers and my bookshelves full of travel literature. I have a giant world map that hangs above my bed and I spend most days just staring at it and thinking about where I want to go next.

What about you?! Have you done anything to your room that's travel related?
