Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is endorsing Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for president, Politico reported.

Bush, who dropped out of the race last month, confirmed the endorsement on Wednesday in an email from the Cruz campaign.

"Ted is a consistent, principled conservative who has demonstrated the ability to appeal to voters and win primary contests, including yesterday’s Utah caucus," Bush said on Facebook.

The statement also went out in an email to supporters from the Cruz campaign, the New York Times said.

"For the sake of our party and country, we must move to overcome the divisiveness and vulgarity Donald Trump has brought into the political arena, or we will certainly lose our chance to defeat the Democratic nominee and reverse President Obama’s failed policies," Bush said.

The news comes hours after Cruz was declared the winner of Utah's Republican primary election.
