CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin is continuing to make strong statements about President Donald Trump’s meeting with fired FBI director James Comey.
The New York Times reported on Tuesday that the president asked Comey to end the investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
The bombshell accusation is based on a memo Comey reportedly wrote shortly after the meeting. If true, Toobin says, it presents a very simple legal case against Trump.
“Three words — obstruction of justice,” Toobin said Tuesday to Wolf Blitzer on The Situation Room.
He explained further: “Telling the FBI director to close down an investigation of your senior campaign adviser for his activities during your campaign for president, if that’s true, that is obstruction of justice.”
Toobin said Comey must have felt the same way when Trump made the alleged request. “Why do you think Director Comey wrote a memo to the file about it? Because he was so appalled that a President of the United States would behave in this way.”

Toobin’s comments are the latest in a string of condemnations of Trump’s actions since he fired Comey last week.
“It is a grotesque abuse of power by the president of the United States,” Toobin said last week on CNN. “This is the kind of thing that goes on in non-democracies. That when there is an investigation that reaches near the president of the United States or the leader of a non-democracy, they fire the people who are in charge of the investigation.”
