Experts Debate Whether You Seriously Need A Top Sheet

The most polarizing bedding issue of our time.

When it comes to bedding, there are few things more controversial than the top sheet.

It's crucial! It's pointless. It keeps me warm! It makes me sweat. It looks nice! No one can see it.

The debate can go on and on, which made us wonder: to top sheet, or not to top sheet?

Turns out that experts are just as split on the topic as we are. "A flat sheet is not really necessary if one uses a comforter matched to one's needs," said luxury linen designer Nancy Koltes. "However, a flat sheet provides both a decorative 'finish' to the bed and a lighter, more breathable option if the comforter begins to feel too warm."

For Jerry Pozniak of luxury dry cleaner Jeeves, bedding and its particulars have more to do with personal convenience than anything else. "I hate making beds," he said, stressing his preference for a duvet over the top sheet. "So for me, [a duvet] is easy and always looks good."

But convenience can work the other way, too. "The duvet cover is heavier and not as soft or flexible as the top sheet," said Ingrid Johnson, Fashion Institute of Technology Professor and Assistant Chairperson. "[And] it is not intended to be laundered as frequently."

So it seems we have to settle this debate with a non-decision decision: Do whatever works best for you. Perhaps you'll skip the top sheet altogether, or only use one during the summertime when the comforter makes things too hot. Either way, don't let anyone tell you you're doing it wrong, because you're not.

It's up to you, dear reader. Which do you prefer? Tell us in the poll below.
