If you hadn’t heard of the film 'Gayby Baby' before yesterday, chances are you know about it now.
The feature film documentary, directed by Maya Newell, follows the lives of four children with same sex parents. Prior to its theatrical release next week, Newell had organised for the film to screen at her former school, Burwood Girls High School, as part of Wear It Purple Day.
However, the film was subjected to intense media scrutiny after reports surfaced student’s families were outraged about the screening. Shortly afterwards, NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli enforced a state-wide ban on the PG-rated movie screening at schools during class hours.
“I want to create a better world for kids and their families,” Newell told HuffPost Play on Thursday.
“We're literally in a gayby boom. It's a growing demographic in Australian society. Those kids are growing and have their own stories to tell.
“There are beautiful differences that are worth celebrating.”
'Gayby Baby' will be released theatrically on September 3.
