Police are investigating the circumstances of the death of two people who were discovered in shallow water off Stockton Beach near Newcastle today.

A search was launched after the boat failed return to Newcastle earlier today.

An investigation uncovered two people and a boat in shallow waters off the remote beach.

The Newcastle Herald reported an eight-metre yacht and crew failed to return to Newcastle Harbour and the last contact with authorities was about 11.30pm on Thursday.
