The Sydney Swans has ruled Buddy Franklin out of Saturday’s AFL qualifying final against Fremantle, with the club saying he is being treated for an ongoing mental health condition.
Sydney Swans General Manager of Football, Tom Harley, said the timing of the star forward's return is unclear as the club continues to monitor his condition.
“Our first priority is looking after Lance’s health,” Harley said.
“Lance has been open with the Club about his condition and while we consider it a private medical matter, he is aware he has our full support.
“The timeframe on his return is unclear at this stage. He will certainly miss this week’s match and we will continue to monitor his condition.
The Swans later on Tuesday, responding to media reports that Franklin was taken to hospital after a seizure at a Bondi cafe, confirmed the star forward has "mild epilepsy".
Coach John Longmire said Franklin wants people to know about it and understand what he is going through.
"It is serious but treatable," he said.
Franklin is expected to marry TV host Jesinta Campbell at the end of the year, with the pair having only a limited time-frame to tie the knot between October''s grand final and training early next year,
“We’ve only got a short period of time,” she said on Sunday.
The Club asks that the 28-year-old's privacy -- and that of his family -- be respected at this time.
The Daily Telegraph has meanwhile reported that Franklin was rushed to Sydney's St Vincent's hospital on Friday after having a seizure at a cafe in Bondi.
