Brian Williams returns to air on MSNBC Tuesday for Pope coverage

After six months of suspension, Brian Williams will be on air again tomorrow on MSNBC.

Broadcaster Brian Williams will return to the air Tuesday, easing into a far less prominent but familiar position of anchoring breaking news.

The former chief anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News, fresh from his much-chronicled, six-month suspension for fabricating stories about his reporting tours, will anchor live breaking news, starting at 3 p.m. ET, on MSNBC for its coverage Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S.

Having issued an apology and sat through an interview with an NBC colleague in June, the 56-year old is not expected to speak further on air about the controversy that led to his demotion from NBC to its sister cable network, both owned by Comcast. He will not participate in interviews with other reporters about his return.

Brian Williams apologizes, blames his ego for telling false tales

Williams, who has worked at NBC for 22 years, was suspended in February after being challenged about his claim that he was on a helicopter that had been hit by enemy fire and forced down in Iraq in 2003. Veterans from the convoy questioned Williams' story on Facebook. Williams eventually recanted the story on air after Stars and Stripes published a story about their online exchange.

After suspending him, NBC News launched in an internal investigation. Williams was brought back after agreeing to take a substantial pay cut to rejoin MSNBC. His replacement during the suspension, NBC News veteran Lester Holt, was named permanent anchor for NBC News' flagship program.

With MSNBC looking to focus more on news and less on commentary, Williams will mainly work on the breaking news desk at the cable network and also serve as a breaking news anchor for NBC News live special reports when Holt is not available.
