South Sydney Rabbitohs players Aaron Gray, 21, and Dylan Walker, 20, are both reportedly recovering in St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney following emergency admission in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The two players had post-season surgery last week: Walker on his left hand and Gray on his right knee.
It was initially reported that the two men both had adverse reactions to the prescribed post-surgery medication.
Sydney CEO John Lee spoke to the media outside the hospital.
"It will become clear they had actually taken more than the regulated amount of the medication," he said.
He added that what is now becoming apparent is that a third person who was with the two men at Gray's home, noticed side effects including vomiting, which lead him to call an ambulance and the two were taken to hospital.
Gray and Walker were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at St Vincent's and were both initially heavily sedated.
"It would appear the medicines they have taken have been overpowering for them," Lee said, then added "it is becoming clear that they took too much of the medication".
"I can report to you now that both players are showing signs of awakedness," he said, adding both families were currently with the players.
Police detectives are now reportedly investigating the incident.
