Emily Blunt Reveals She Became An American Citizen 'Mainly For Tax Reasons'

British actress Emily Blunt recently made headlines for becoming a U.S. citizen in August. In an Oct. 4 interview with The Sunday Times, Blunt revealed exactly what motivated her to become an American.

“It’s mainly for tax reasons,” said Blunt in the Times. “I didn’t want to renounce my Queen.”

Blunt later joked in the interview about the legal process of becoming a citizen, called naturalization.

“You have to learn all about the Constitution,” said Blunt. “You can’t be a habitual drunk, you can’t be on a guerrilla squad and you can’t be a prostitute, which is a shame.”

The actress, who has discussed the path to citizenship in many recent interviews, has come under fire for her joking remarks. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Blunt said, “I became an American citizen recently, and that night, we watched the Republican debate and I thought, ‘This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?’”

In another interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Blunt said as a Brit she used to look down on Americans, “Because we’re better than them.” But now, as an American citizen, “ ... I’m only half better.”

Unfortunately, many didn’t see that the actress was joking, as Blunt later apologized for her remarks.

“It was so not the intention to hurt anybody or cause any offense, so I really apologize to those that I caused offense,” said Blunt on NBC’s “Today.” “It was just an offhand joke. I think I’ll probably leave the political jokes to late-night or something.”
