Sydney is a flirty city. Just look at her glittering skirts of water lapping against long, sandy shores and laid-back pubs promising laughs in the sun.

It's no surprise then that a travel app designed to help newcomers meet the city, and each other, is so successful it's being snapped up by New York.

Award-winning free app Thirst for Sydney launched last year and now, co-creators Rob Dunlop and Charlie Davis are preparing for Thirst for New York.

Dunlop told The Huffington Post Australia the app had more than 2000 Sydney users -- and locals were welcome to sign up.

"It's not just for travelers," Dunlop said.

"Most Sydneysiders love to show off their city and it's a fun way to meet someone for a drink or to explore the city with a self-guided itinerary."

The app can be used to meet travel buddies, announce your arrival in a city, and let people know what you're doing as well as a source of information for the city.

Dunlop said that while there were plans in the works for Thirst for Melbourne and other Australian cities, the lure of New York was too great.

"New York's popularity is just incredible -- it's a big audience for us and there's a bit of a buzz about the city," Dunlop said.

"Thirst for Sydney proved the concept and now the idea is it can be replicated around the world."
