If you've never seen a baby ring-tailed lemur before, then today's the day you get a new definition of cute.

Meet Imerina, the female infant named after one of the ancient kingdoms of Madagascar.

She was born at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo and is still sticking close to her mum Rikitra and the less exotically named dad Bruce.

Keeper Sasha Brook said Rikrita was a first-time mum.

“She has started to climb on her own and is also starting to mouth solid foods,” Brook said.

“Rikitra is never more than one to two metres away, keeping a watchful eye on her offspring, and rescuing her from any pickles she gets herself into.

"Imerina is also starting to jump on to her father Bruce’s back."

The family is getting used to life as a trio on an island separated from the other lemurs.
