Mother of troubled NRL player Matthew Lodge says she is concerned for his welfare after New York arrest

The mother of troubled NRL player Matthew Lodge says she is concerned for his welfare after he was arrested for assault and intimidation in New York.
The 20-year-old Wests Tigers forward remains in police custody after he was charged over an incident in which he followed two women home and told them, “this is the night that you die”.
He also allegedly assaulted a man who came to their aid.
Lodge’s mother told 9NEWS this morning she had not been able to speak to her son since the incident.
“I haven’t spoken to Matthew at all, no,” she said.
“My husband’s on a plane to New York. I have no idea what’s happened but I’m concerned for his welfare.”
She said her son was battling some personal issues but offered her support.

“Matthew has a lot of problems,” Lodge’s mother said.
“But he’s a good person, he is a good person deep down. I don’t know what’s happened over there.
“Something’s happened and I’m not sure of the details.”
Last night, Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe confirmed the club had torn up Lodge’s contract over his latest indiscretion.
"The club is incredibly disappointed to learn that Matthew Lodge has been charged by police while overseas on holiday,” Mr Pascoe said.
"We have since made the decision to terminate Lodge's playing contract with Wests Tigers, effective immediately.”
Mr Pascoe said the club would continue to offer welfare and counselling options to the prop to ensure he had the support he needed.
It is alleged Lodge followed the women into a unit after they were let into the building by a male resident.
Lodge then assaulted the man and damaged the apartment, a New York police report said.
Lodge was charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, assault and menacing.
The charges come just months after the young player was stood down by the Tigers over domestic violence allegations.
Lodge was granted strict bail conditions after facing a Sydney court in August for six offences including stalking, intimidation and assault.
