The Sydney Opera House played host the Australian Fashion Laureate Awards on Friday, an initiative that celebrates professionals whose careers have promoted and advanced the Australian fashion industry here at home and also internationally.

Now in its eighth year, the awards are voted for by a panel of industry peers, with previous winners including including Nicky and Simone Zimmermann of Zimmermann, Jenny Kee, Collette Dinnigan, Pamela Easton and Lydia Pearson of Easton Pearson, Carla Zampatti, Akira Isogawa as well as Simon Lock, the founder of Australian Fashion Week.

The NSW Minister For Women Prudence Howard spoke at the awards, calling on the Australian fashion industry to apply due diligence in relation to the exploitation of young women within the industry, and for our society to allow young girls to remain young with tasteful, age appropriate fashions.

Former VOGUE Australia Editor-in-Chief Nancy Pilcher was awarded Australian fashion’s most prestigious award, the Australian Fashion Laureate. Additional winners across the categories included Maticevski for Best Australian Womenswear, Calibre for Best Australian Menswear, Scanlan Theodore for Best Australian Retailer and STRATEAS.CARLUCCI for Best Australian Emerging Designer.

A well respected icon in Australian fashion, Nancy Pilcher was awarded the Laureate in recognition for her contribution to the industry, through her former roles as Editor-in-Chief for VOGUE Australia and Vice-President of Editorial Development in the Asia Pacific region for Conde Nast.

“I am immensely privileged to shine a spotlight on this year’s industry elected Australian fashion icons and 2015 Laureate recipient, Nancy Pilcher” said Emily Weight, Director of Strategy and Brand, IMG Fashion. “It is through their dedication, creativity and passion that the Australian fashion industry’s global profile is so strong."

VOGUE International Editor Suzy Menkes was also in attendance as a guest of honour.
