Jarryd Hayne's recent run of patchy form has come back to bite him, with the former NRL star dropped from the San Francisco 49ers team for Friday's game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Hayne, who has been the 49ers starting punt returner for the first six games of the regular season, was listed on the "inactive" roster for today's game after fumbling again in his last outing against the Baltimore Ravens.

It was Hayne's second fumble in three games and third of the season.

Hayne's six games have yielded just eight punt return attempts for 76 yards, according to ESPN's statistics centre.

Just before Friday's game was to kickoff, Hayne's name was revealed on the inactive list -- effectively meaning he was dropped from the team.

The 49ers official website called the move a "surprise".

"The one surprise is that Jarryd Hayne is inactive for the 49ers," wrote team reporter Joe Fann.

"Hayne has served as the starting punt returner for each of the team's first six games. That means that Bush and Bruce Ellington will likely handle all return duties."

Daily Telegraph sport reporter Phil 'Buzz' Rothfield was a little disappointed, having travelled all the way to America to watch Hayne play.
