Melbourne Cup may be called the race that stops a nation, but around the country millions of Aussies keen for a punt still need the boss' tick of approval to go and have a flutter on the world's greatest horse race.

Despite decades of whinging from states and territories, Victoria's still the only state that declares Cup Day an official holiday.

But hope could be on the way with a new campaign urging those in power to make Melbourne Cup Day a national day off.

Headed by former Brisbane Lions star Jonathan 'Browny' Brown, the viral campaign's asking Aussies to spread the word and take up the fight... all the way to the Prime Minister's office.
