Julie Bishop: 'I Have Absolutely No Concerns About Gay Marriage'

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has reiterated her support for a plebiscite on gay marriage, claiming she has " absolutely no concerns" about the hot-button social issue.

Bishop, appearing on Network Ten's The Project, said that she looked forward to the Australian people having their say on legalising same-sex marriage.

"I have absolutely no concerns about it myself," she told the panel when quizzed by co-host Carrie Bickmore.

"But I know there are a lot of people who are deeply concerned about the issue."

"That's why I think a plebiscite, where the Australian people get to have a vote on it, on an issue as fundamental as this that goes to the very composition of our community -- the way we treat each other, the way we feel about each other -- I think that's an important issue for a plebiscite."

Bishop told The Huffington Post Australia in an exclusive interview in August that she was "showing leadership" on same-sex marriage within the Liberal Party.

The Turnbull Government has proposed a plebiscite in 2017, which will trigger an immediate change in same-sex marriage laws if a 'yes' vote passed.

"I look forward to the Australian people having their say," Bishop said.

Bishop also said she thought it was "a little out of date to be making people knights and dames" after Turnbull on Monday scrapped the policy brought in by his predecessor Tony Abbott.

"We've got the Australian awards, we've got the Australian honours and I think that's a little more contemporary and appropriate," she said.

Bishop dodged a question about her thoughts on Abbott's 'Captain's Call' of knighting Prince Philip on Australia Day, joking: "Fortunately I was speaking in emoji then".
