Australian racing is mourning the death of young jockey Tim Bell, who died overnight in Singapore in a non-racing accident.

Bell, who was crowned champion Brisbane jockey in the 2013-14 season, took up a short term contract in Singapore recently in a bid to further his career.

It is understood Singapore police are investigating the circumstances of his death.

Bell rode his first group 1 winner on Tinto in the Queensland Oaks in the final months of his championship-winning season and then pushed Jim Byrne in last year's Brisbane title race.

He was granted a three-month contract in Singapore from mid-September until December 31 while pursuing feature rides during the spring carnival in Melbourne.

He started his career in northern NSW with respected trainer Sue Grills before making a name for himself in Queensland.

His last winner came at the Singapore meeting on Sunday when he booted home Lim's Bullet.

Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys offered his condolences to Bell's family, who grew up in Narrabri and did much of his apprentice work with Sue Grills at Tamworth.

"This is terrible news. Tim's sudden death has come as a great shock to the entire racing industry," V'landys said.

"Tim was not only popular with his peers but also anyone he came in contact with. Tim was a loyal, positive person who had a drive to be successful."

"To lose someone so young and with such a gift for riding is simply tragic and devastating. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends."
