Australian Senator David Leyonhjelm Stars In NRA Video

An Australian senator has appeared in a National Rifle Association propaganda video and declared his homeland "a nation of victims" because of its strict gun laws.

Liberal Democrat senator David Leyonhjelm appears in the video which was made in response to Hillary Clinton's recent praise of Australian gun control laws.

“We are a nation of victims. You cannot own a gun for self-defense, it doesn’t matter what the circumstances, it doesn’t matter how big the threat, you cannot defend yourself,” senator Leyonhjelm said.

“If you look at what Australia did, it’s a defenseless country these days. I am absolutely in awe of the success of the NRA at holding back the tide and it never gives an inch.”

"We love the NRA here in Australia amongst us gun owners and in fact we rely on you guys to also help us hold the line in Australia."

The NRA "news" report then delves into a series of interviews that appear to have been conducted circa 1997, when the Australia's gun buy back scheme was coming into force.

This is how old the rest of the footage is. It features 'member of parliament' Mike Rann, who went on to serve nine years as South Australia's premier from 2002

Leyonhjelm has pushed for the rights of gun owners since his 2013 election to the senate.

He recently negotiated a 12-month sunset clause on a ban on importing the Adler lever-action shotgun.

Former Prime Minister John Howard, who in 1996 spearheaded the ban on automatic and semi-automatic weapons in the wake of the Port Arthur massacre has said he does not believe Australians want to see looser restrictions.
