A 23-year-old man has been refused bail after allegedly inflicting “horrendous” injuries on a 10-month-old boy in a shower at a Sydney home.
Paramedics called for police assistance after they found the boy with burns to around 40 percent of his body at a Penrith home yesterday.
The boy had suffered severe burns to his head, neck, chest and back, and also appeared to have other serious head and facial injuries.
He was taken to Westmead Children's Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition in an induced coma.
Atare Tepania, who was staying at the Penrith home, was arrested yesterday and charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm.
He applied for bail in Penrith Local Court today and it was formally refused.
Police will allege Tepania placed the boy under a hot shower and left the room to light a cigarette and charge his phone.
“This 10-month-old received what I would say are significant and horrendous injuries,” Detective Superintendent Brett McFadden said today.
“We understand that some of the injuries relate to burning of the skin and about 40 percent of the child's body.
“There are other injuries there that appear to be consistent with blunt force trauma.”
The child's mother was aware of her son’s injuries and was extremely upset by the events, Det. Supt McFadden said.
“She is with the child at the hospital,” he said.
“We spoke with her at length last night. Suffice to say she is very distressed.”
Tepania was remanded in custody and will appear again in court on December 14.
