Triple J's Hottest 100 is back for its 22nd instalment, with voting in the so-called "world's greatest musical democracy" opening on Thursday.

The yearly song countdown, announced annually on Australia Day January 26, is as ubiquitous as it is controversial in the eyes of Aussie music lovers. Millions of votes are cast each year; click here to cast yours.

Favourites to take out the coveted #1 spot include Major Lazer, DJ Snake and MØ with 'Lean On,' Tame Impala with 'Let It Happen' and The Weeknd with 'Can't Feel My Face'; while the likes of Chet Faker, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Jarryd James, Meg Mac, Disclosure, Peking Duk, Courtney Barnett and RUFUS are also expected to make good showings.

Fans can vote for songs on a long, loooong "short" list Triple J have prepared on their website, but you can also add any track you like (as long as it was released in 2015) if it doesn't appear on the list. However, after the debacle of 2014's #Tay4Hottest100 campaign, which saw a write-in campaign to see Taylor Swift's 'Shake It Off' steal the poll, Triple J have amended the rules a bit. Under the heading "Play Fair" on the voting rules page:

  • Don’t troll the poll. Votes made as part of a competition that promotes a song or artist, or a campaign that undermines the Hottest 100 may be disqualified or ignored.
  • We want genuine votes, from genuine listeners. If we feel something’s preventing that from happening, we’ll look into it for you and take appropriate action.

To launch the Hottest 100, the radio station also released this insane video featuring pretty much every big name that will inevitably feature in the final countdown -- from Tame Impala and Mark Ronson to Courtney Barnett and Foals, Vance Joy to Mumford & Sons and Sticky Fingers to Peking Duk. Take a peek and try to keep up with all the cameos.
