NASA Engineer Explains How To Build A Death Star Using Asteroids

Forget Star Wars. This Is How NASA Would Build A Death Star

Drop everything. NASA has come up with a sensible way to build Death Stars.

Brian Muirhead, who works as a chief engineer at the space agency, said the super-weapon featured in Star Wars could be created from an asteroid.

In Star Wars, the fortress is built in space by transferring materials from a planet into space.

However, Muirhead told Wired an existing asteroid could provide all the metal needed for construction.

“You have organic compounds, you have water—all the building blocks you would need to build your family Death Star." he explained.

The engineer, is working on NASA's Asteroid Redirect Mission.

The aim of the mission is to use a robot to collect a "multi-ton boulder from an asteroid's surface, and redirect it into a stable orbit around the moon."

While this landing will have absolutely nothing to do with building a Death Star (obviously), hearing Muirhead's thoughts on the megastructure is still exciting.

May the force be with him.
