By now you’d know it’s commonplace for the things the Kardashians put in their mouths to make global headlines -- and monkey bread is no exception.
The sticky cake which is served as a dessert in the United States started trending last month when Khloe Kardashian shared a photo of the treat amongst a bunch of other pies (of the dessert variety) to Instagram, in preparation for the family’s Thanksgiving celebration.
According to the Internet, monkey bread is virtually unknown outside of The States, however like most American treats (looking at you brownies and anything peanut butter related) it's likely to descend Down Under soon.
So what is it exactly? Basically, layers of dough sprinkled with cinnamon and smothered in caramel sauce. For the "dough" most people use canned biscuits (another peculiarly American thing -- this is scone dough sold in a tin) or dry pudding mix but the foodies like to make it from scratch.
A quick Google search will tell you a batch of monkey bread is a summer holiday tradition served hot so the baked segments can be torn away with your fingers and eaten sans cutlery.
Kind of like compressed cinnamon scrolls drizzled in the caramel sauce you may remember from Pizza Hut when the dessert bars still existed.
The pastry has a few different names -- monkey puzzle bread, sticky bread or African coffee cake and Betty Crocker recommends using just five ingredients to make the dish -- granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, buttermilk biscuits and butter.
With 43,000 plus images of the gooey delight posted to Instagram, leave it to America to reinvent this 1950s treat into candy cane, coffee and even 'Smores form.
