Nothing says an Australian summer -- or Christmas -- quite like fresh seafood. So much so, for the last 20 years the Sydney Fish Market has opened its doors to crowds of thousands for a 36-hour marathon ahead of the big day.

Kicking off from 5am on Wednesday shoppers will able to buy their seafood at any time until the market shuts at 5pm on Christmas Eve.

During those 36 hours, it is expected shoppers will buy a whopping total of 660 tonnes of seafood -- including 130 tonnes of prawns and around 840,000 oysters.

"We’re expecting 110,000 visitors during the 36-hour Seafood Marathon this Christmas, so Sydney Fish Market will be a busy and exciting place to be," Sydney Fish Market General Manager, Bryan Skepper, told The Huffington Post Australia.

"Even at 3am, the atmosphere is fantastic. All through the night, crowds move through the market picking up their seafood and other items for their Christmas feast.

"You’ll find families, couples and friends shopping and perhaps even enjoying the unique opportunity for an early morning snack of fish and chips."

Skepper also said larger seafood retailers will have around 150 staff working over the marathon period to cope with the demand, plus clearways to facilitate traffic and crowd movement and additional parking at Sydney Secondary College.
