When you hear the word 'camping' you probably imagine rows of caravans lined up like a display village, nondescript concrete shower blocks, and heated family debates on the best way to erect your tent. Camping is a much loved Australian pastime and so are lazy days spent on a strip of sand along our outstretched coastlines. Combine the two and magic happens. Here is a small selection of great beach camping sites around the country.

Cape Tribulation, Queensland. The only place where two World Heritage sites meet -- the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics. Located 2.5 hours drive north of Cairns, camping at Cape Tribulation offers rainforest walks and the Great Barrier Reef right on your doorstep.

Fraser Island, Queensland. The world’s largest sand island and a World Heritage-listed national park, Fraser Island is accessible only by 4WD, and boasts dozens of picturesque camping spots along the beach.

Port Stephens, New South Wales. An array of accommodation options are available at the various sites around Port Stephens and the surrounding towns, including cabins, cottages and places to moor the boat. Great for those who aren't totally ready to rough it.

Barwon Heads, Victoria. Perfect for families, the beaches along Barwon River offer safe swimming spots. If you prefer waves, the ocean beaches boast some of the best surf in the region, especially at Thirteenth Beach.

Kangaroo Island, South Australia. Famous for its various and abundant offering of wildlife, Kangaroo Island has an impressive selection of camping spots within the Flinders Chase National Park. If you're planning to go during school holidays book ahead, as it's a popular spot.

Freycinet National Park, Tasmania. Home to the world renowned five-star luxury hotel Saffire Freycinet, camping in the national park might be a more realistic financial option. Keep in mind that annual entry fees apply to the park, though something tells us you’ll get your money's worth with the stunning views on offer alone.

Cape Le Grand National Park, Western Australia. Coastal scenery doesn't get much more picturesque. Choose from an array of activities on offer, including rock climbing, bush walking or kangaroo gazing -- it's said they love to sunbake on the beach.
