A man has been remanded in custody over the alleged poisoning of his baby daughter on the Gold Coast.

The 22-year-old from Carrara gave his two-month old child the powerful narcotic Oxycontin in an attempt to settle her.

"We will allege that he put the child down, was looking for an afternoon sleep and some time to himself. The child became unsettled, and as a result, he made a decision to calm the child with this drug," Detective Inspector Aubort said.

The child was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital where she responded well to medical treatment and is currently stable.

The man appeared in court this morning after being charged with one count of administering poison with intent to harm and possessing a controlled substance.

"It is sufficient to say that any ordinary person who would make a decision like this is clearly grossly negligent," said Inspector Aubort.

"This is a restricted and controlled drug at a high level of prescription for pain relief... It is not in the ballpark to be considered to be administered to a child."

The investigation in to the events leading up to the incident are ongoing.

The man made no application for bail and is due to appear back in the Southport Magistrates Court on January 27.
