Health Apps That Will Help You Stay On Track In 2016

It's one thing to vow to be healthier, fitter and more mindful in 2016 on New Year's Day -- quite another to put that pledge into sustainable action (the word 'sustainable' is important here -- going to the gym once on January 2nd doesn't count).

So unless you're the ultimate Dedicated Debbie, we're bargaining on the fact you might need a little help keeping on track this year. Luckily for you, these apps are designed to help with anything from fitness to weight loss to sleep -- in short, all the things that make up a healthier you.

Here are some of our favourite health apps to help you on your path to health this year.

Zova -- free

Hate the gym but want to get fit? Zova just might be the app for you. Designed to help you get fit within the comfort of your own home (in fact, within the comfort of a space as big as your yoga mat) Zova provides a range of unique work outs, all in 20 minutes or less. Zova is now also available on Apple Watch and the new Apple TV.

Raw Desserts -- A$5.99

Perfect for those with a sweet tooth but who still want to eat well, Raw Desserts offers a bunch of recipes that are totally free from refined sugar, wheat, gluten, dairy, eggs, yeast and colourings -- enabling you to stay healthy but still have your cake (and eat it too).

Pocket Yoga -- A$4.49

Carry your yoga workout in your pocket with this handy app. Pocket yoga allows you to practise any time, anywhere. All you need to do is roll out your mat, place your device in front and let the app guide you through a session. Namaste!

Headspace -- Free with in-app purchases

Though we know it sounds a little weird to suggest you could use your phone to meditate (when surely shouldn't meditation be about switching off?) this app makes it possible. Using proven meditation and mindfulness techniques, Headspace allows you to train your mind for a happier, healthier life.

WaterMinder -- A$2.99

We all know we should drink 8 glasses of water per day but not only is it a goal difficult to achieve, it can also be hard to keep track of. WaterMinder helps you track how much water you have, plus your hydration levels, based on your weight or your personal goal. Apple Watch users can also activate a visual reminder.

Recipes by The Healthy Chef -- A$4.49

This app provides exactly what the title suggests -- healthy recipes! All of which are rich in natural whole food, vitamins and minerals. For those with dietary restraints, The Healthy Chef Recipes app also features wheat free, gluten free, vegetarian, raw and sugar free recipes.

Sweat with Kayla -- In app purchases

If you don't already know Kayla Itsines from Instagram, you can get to know her now. Off the back of her success of Bikini Body Guides, Kayla has launched her own app which provides a number of 28-minute workouts as well as recipes and progress pictures.

Sleep Cycle -- Free

Nobody is friends with their alarm clock, but Sleep Cycle might just make the process of waking up just that little bit easier. As we all know, when we sleep we go through different phases, from deep sleep to lighter sleep. Sleep Cycle is an intelligent alarm clock that wakes you up in your lighter sleep phase, meaning you will feel less tired when you wake up.

That Sugar App -- Free

Most of us aren't aware of how much sugar is hidden in foods (even seemingly non-sugary things like pasta sauce!). That Sugar App allows you to scan the barcodes of supermarket products to find out how many teaspoons of sugar are in each serving. You can set yourself goals of how many teaspoons you want to consume per day, week or month, and share your progress with family and friends.
