If you ever wonder the cost of rent as you look out the train window in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane these maps are for you.
Share accommodation website Flatmates has compiled rail maps with the average rent per station suburb, and chief executive Thomas Clement told The Huffington Post Australia it showed some surprisingly good value suburbs.
"It's such empowering information to make a decision by because it displays the two most important things you think about when you're choosing a place to live -- the location and the cost," Clement told HuffPost Australia.
"When it comes to location most people means commute to work so it makes sense to go by the rail line.
"What stands out to me is if you take somewhere like Newtown in Sydney, in people's heads, it's a massive area but when you look on the map, it's actually quite small," he said.
"If you just search for rooms to rent in Newtown and don't expand to Stanmore and Petersham and all those places that you think of as the one area, you might end up paying an extra $40 a week."
Across Australia, Clement said the demand for sharehouse accommodation was increasing.
"It's not just on our site, we're seeing a huge increase in share accommodation as a market sector, and we're sure the next census will reflect that," Clement said.
"It's a sign of the times that share housing is part of a typical journey now for young people in Australia.
"It's no longer the case that we move out of home and into our own place. Also as people stay single longer and find partners later in life, the rate of individuals buying homes is increasing.
"Covering the mortgage on your own, it's common to rent out a room to help with the repayments."
