Former foreign minister Bob Carr has likened the new leader of the Nationals Party and Deputy Prime Minister, Barnaby Joyce, to US presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Appearing on Channel Seven’s Sunrise on Friday with former Liberal leader John Hewson, Carr was asked by host Samantha Armytage what he thought of Joyce when he made the remark.
“There’s an element of the Trump in him,” he said.
The outspoken Joyce is known to be a controversial character and Carr believes that a team of people will be needed to filter his every thought whenever he is required to perform as acting prime minister in the absence of Malcolm Turnbull.
“There will have to be people from his office allocated, you’d probably need about twenty of them, to the office of his deputy to filter every thought he has and to be there at his side when he is planning his comments and doing his interviews,” he said.
For most Australians, Joyce is best known as the man who last year threatened to euthanize two Yorkshire terriers belonging to actor Johnny Depp.
“It’s time that Pistol and Boo buggered off back to the United States,” Joyce said in a video that made international headlines.
Carr went on to say that he believes that Joyce, a self-confessed ‘maddie’, will eventually cause the Prime Minister to explode.
“Those of us who know and love Malcolm know that there is a pulsating temper there ready to explode,” he said.
“He’s a deputy that may very easily bring on a Malcolm Turnbull temper tantrum and Malcolm will probably be justified when he explodes.”
