Former New Zealand cricketer Martin Crowe has died, aged 53.

The legendary batsman lived with terminal double hit lymphoma. He was diagnosed in 2014.

"It it with heavy hearts that the family of Martin Crowe, MBE, advise his death," a statement from his family read.

"[Martin died] peacefully today surrounded by family.

"God speed. Rest in peace."

Crowe was a talented right-handed batsman and captain for New Zealand, scoring 5,444 runs in 77 Test matches between 1982 and 1995.

He had a formidable average of 45.36 and top scored at 299.

Crowe was the cousin of Hollywood actor Russell Crowe, and sat on the board for the South Sydney Rabbitohs -- owned by Russell Crowe.
