'200 Years Of Australian Fashion' Exhibition On Display At NGV Australia

Take A Glimpse Into The Past: 200 Years Of Australian Fashion
Wayne Taylor

History buffs and fashion lovers, unite. No less than 200 years of Australian style is ready for you to feast your eyes upon in the first and largest survey exhibition of Australian fashion

With more than 120 works by 90 designers, the '200 Years Of Australian Fashion' exhibition covers everything from colonial dress to the glitzy outfits of the swinging sixties, right up to eye-popping contemporary wear.

The exhibition, which is on display at Melbourne's NGV Australia at Federation Square, includes a series of themed rooms whereby visitors can wander through designs, fashions and even department stores of yesteryear.

For instance, one immersive room will replicate a 1950s department store while another will represent a French style salon complete with examples of 1950s mid-century style.

Australian fashion icons Linda Jackson and Jenny Kee will also revisit their iconic 1980s Flamingo Park boutique, where visitors can expect no shortage of pink flamingos, green Astroturf and white picket fences.

But perhaps the biggest highlight comes from renowned fashion export Dion Lee, who has unveiled a four-metre tall Swarovski crystal-encrusted gown lit from within as an exclusive commission for NGV.
