A mother trapped in a burning apartment has been forced to drop her two children -- including a two-day-old baby -- out a window and into the arms of her neighbour.
The second-floor apartment in Lakemba, in Sydney's south-west, was in flames last night and the 27-year-old mother was unable to reach her front door.
She took her baby and two year old toddler to the window where she managed to get the attention of her neighbour who acted quickly. The man told Nine News Sydney he'd been watching the football on television when he saw the apartment block in his street on fire. So he grabbed two mattresses and ran to help the mother and catch the children.
The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen of the apartment, before spreading to surrounding apartments. Around 50 people were evacuated.
When firefighters arrived, the mother was still unable to leave the building and was sitting on the window sill before a ladder was used to get her to safety.
Police officers would like to get in touch with the man who helped save the children, to thank him for his good deed.
