Magnitude-6.9 Earthquake Hits Off Vanuatu
United States Geological Survey

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 has struck off Vanuatu's north coast.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake hit 151 kilometres north-north-west of Port-Olry. The Survey said the quake was 35 kilometres deep.

The shallower the earthquake, the more damage it is likely to cause.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre initially warned of "hazardous tsunami waves" within 300 kilometres of the earthquake's epicentre, but has since issued an update stating that the threat of a tsunami from the earthquake has "mostly passed."

The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed there is no tsunami threat to Australia's mainland, islands or territories.

The incident comes just over a year after Cyclone Pam devastated the nation, affecting more than 188,000 people.
