Does Donald Trump Really Want To Win The Nomination?

There are signs that suggest maybe not. Hey, let’s speculate.

While April Fools' Day is a holiday worthy of universal condemnation, we at First To Last nevertheless found ourselves inspired by this year’s Fooltide season. And we had cause to wonder: What if we were all getting punked in this election year? What if the unrelenting dumpster fire that is the candidacy of real estate mogul and encrimsoned anger-haggis Donald Trump was one big terrible prank on everyone? What if it were like most April Fools' Day japes -- a hackneyed joke that inevitably goes too far and collapses on everyone involved?

Let’s be clear: probably not. It may even be preferable that this isn’t some sort of waking nightmare we’re all living. At the same time, there are signs it may all have been some sort of swindle -- an epic con designed to tear down failed institutions and make us come to grips with what we’ve become in this fallen, reality-television-besotted world. This week, we’ll indulge in some heavy speculation and consider the evidence that maybe this has all been a joke on us. After all, the alternative is that a major political party is about to hand the keys to its kingdom over to a psychotic and uninformed demagogue. See, this is us being optimistic.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
