Another day, another outburst of awesome from Australia's favourite rugby player David Pocock.
Pocock, 27, is renowned for such things as his ongoing activism against homphobia and open cut mines which destroy the environment. More recently he announced he was taking a sabbatical for a year. Why? Because he's David Pockock and he's a fantastically self-aware person who's going to go and make himself and/or a lucky community somewhere and/or the entire world an even more excellent person/place.
So to today's excellent Pocockery. It's an apology which he published on his personal blog and it reads thus:
Yesterday I faced the judiciary for the first time in my rugby career. I am incredibly disappointed with my actions. I endeavour to play the game I love in a way that reflects the kind of toughness and decency I think rugby can teach us.
On Saturday night I did not live up to those standards, placing Michael Leitch in danger by binding on his neck in a maul. It was not my intention to hurt Michael, but in these sorts of circumstances it is not intention that matters. I am grateful that World Rugby and SANZAAR are concerned about making the game safer for all of us.
I would like to take this opportunity to apologise again to Michael. And to apologise to the Chiefs, Brumbies and all those who follow rugby. I'd also like to apologise to my team mates who I will let down over the next few weeks while suspended.
It has also been reported that Pocock twice called the rival player in question, Michael Leitch, to express his regret. It's all over an incident which occurred in this big pile of humanity in a match between the Brumbies and Chiefs, which for the record the Chiefs won 48-23.
Part of the incident Pocock has been cited for https://t.co/82ZJZn7GYt— Steve Lenthall (@steve_l15) April 2, 2016
Pocock contravened Law 10.4 (e) for playing a player without the ball and Law 10.4 (m) acting in contrary to good sportsmanship. It's not entirely clear what he did, but whatever it was, it was in the above mess somewhere.
What is absolutely crystal clear is that Pocock is a gentleman who in his blog on Wednesday added another chapter to his already overflowing awesome file. Onya Dave.
