Scores of marriage equality supporters have marched on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's Sydney office in a bid to get the coalition to scrap its plan for a national vote on the controversial issue.
The rally kicked off at Taylor Square at noon on Saturday and has made its way to Turnbull’s Edgecliff office in his east Sydney electorate of Wentworth.
Protesters have used social media to call on Turnbull to meet them but that's unlikely, with the PM earlier today delivering a speech to Victorian Liberals in Melbourne.
Greens MP Jenny Leong and deputy opposition leader Tanya Plibersek were among those at the rally.
March organisers said most Australians backed marriage equality and called on the government to dump a proposed national vote on the issue.
"It will cost Australia over $500 million to have a divisive plebiscite which is not necessary," the group said on Facebook.
"John Howard did not have a plebiscite to change the Marriage Act, and there is no reason why we need one to reverse it now.
"As Turnbull insists on having a post-election plebiscite that will hurt LGBTQI Australians and their families, including many of his constituents, we are organising a rally to his office to tell him that's simply not good enough."
Labor wants a free parliamentary vote on gay marriage and has criticised the more than $100 million that is expected to be spent on a national vote but the coalition has repeatedly backed a plebiscite.
Australian Marriage Equality has backed the ALP's stance, saying there is no need to wait for a national vote to decide the issue.
The Greens have also called on Malcolm Turnbull to break with his party and allow a free vote on marriage equality -- a campaign that picked up steam following the PM's appearance at Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
Plibersek told reporters that the coalition's plan for a plebiscite didn't make sense.
At a time when the government was cutting spending on services like health and education there was no need to "spend $160 million on a plebiscite", she said.
"We know that conservatives in the Liberal and National parties have already said that they will ignore the results of the plebiscite so we're having $160 million plebiscite in order for the conservatives ... to ignore the result."
