A Melbourne mother charged with the murder of her 14-month-old child has been excused from a court hearing amid concerns about her mental health.
Sofina Nikat, 22, was taken into custody on Tuesday after being charged with murdering her 14-month-old daughter Sanaya Sahib.
After being seen by a doctor and nurse who were worried about the effect a court appearance could have on her, Nikat was excused from court on Wednesday.
"It's my client's preference she not be brought up," Defence counsel Michael McNamara said.
Police on Tuesday said during a short court appearance Nikat had made "full admissions" during an interview to killing her daughter.
The matter is expected to return to court for a committal hearing in August.
A massive search involving volunteers and police began after reports emerged the child was missing. The toddler's body was found at Darebin Creek in Melbourne's north-east, on Sunday.
