A two year old girl has been put in an induced coma and several others were left seriously injured after a train and a car collided on the NSW mid-noth coast.

A 30-year-old woman appears to have serious injuries is still being treated onsite by paramedics, while two children, aged two and a seven were air lifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition, NSW Police said.

NSW Ambulance Paramedics treated a six-year-old girl for shock and minor injuries.

The accident happened around 11am but police have not yet released details of how the train and car came to collide at Coraville Road, in Moorland.

Two Westpac helicopters landed in a paddock alongside an over-turned vehicle beside the rail line at Coraville Road about 30 kilometres from Taree.

Glenn Ramplin, from Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Newcastle, told The Huffington Post Australia two other children, aged around six and seven years old, are not said to be as badly injured as the two year old.

"At this stage we don't know the exact condition of the mother and two of the children but they are not said to be as badly injured as the two year old, who is in an induced coma," Ramplin said.

The driver of the train was treated for shock and will be taken to Manning Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

Officers attached to Manning Great Lakes Local Area Command with the assistance of Crash Investigation Unit established a crime scene and are currently investigating the incident.
