There's a tear-jerker story behind this gorgeous video of a newborn wombat.

Smaller than a thumb, the baby wombat, or joey as they're called, is shown drinking from a syringe at Sleepy Burrows Wombat Sanctuary.

Devastatingly, the wombat's carer Donna Stepan said on Facebook there was little chance of survival for the young wombat.

"A wombat's gestation/pregnancy is 28 days, after which time the joey climbs up into the mothers pouch. This pinkie wombat would be a couple of days old I would imagine as she is smaller than my thumb.

"All I can do for her is feed her and keep her warm. I could not as a human replace her 'mother' at such a young age. So two more wombats gone effectively."

The NSW self-funded sanctuary cares for injured wombats with the view of returning them to the wild.
