A police hunt for the gunman continues following a shooting in Sydney's west on Friday that left a man dead and two others injured.

The man killed is believed to be Walid 'Wally' Ahmad, a convicted killer, drug dealer and standover man, a senior police source has told the ABC.

"But we are still waiting for formal identification," the police source said.

Emergency crews were called to the car park of a shopping centre in Bankstown just before midday and found two men and a woman injured.

One of those men died at the scene.

The other man and woman were taken to hospital. Their condition is not yet known.

No arrests have been made over the attack and the shooter is believed to be at large.

Police Superintendent Dave Eardley said it was a targeted shooting.

“The indication is that this gunman could not act alone. We had information of a white Mercedes vehicle being used, and I can confirm that vehicle has been located burnt out in the Greenacre area.”

ABC reports that Mr Ahmad was wanted in relation to a recent fatal shooting at a smash repairs business in the nearby subject of Condell Park.

Superintendent Eardley refused to link the two incidents, but did acknowledge police attached to the Condell Park shooting would be reviewing Friday's events.

“Certainly there has been a recent shooting in this area, in the Condell Park area ... those detectives [investigating that shooting] will be reviewing the incident today.”

According to ABC reports, officers are also investigating whether a car crash in Benalla, in north-eastern Victoria, is linked to the incident.

Earlier, police found a burnt out white Mercedes nearby in Greenacre, believed to have been used in the shooting.

But officers believe the car found in Benalla may have been used as the third getaway car used by the shooters.

Yesterday, Superintendent David Eardley said more police would be stationed on the streets of Bankstown in a "proactive stance".

He said it was concerning the shooting was in a public place, but cautioned people in the area to remain calm.

"Any time people have a want to go and use a firearm to settle a dispute. It’s clearly targeted, this isn’t a random shooting. It was clearly towards the man who has died as a result of the gunshot wound.

“I can assure the Bankstown and neighbouring communities not to be concerned about this incident … this was targeted. This didn’t just happen.

Drivers are being told to avoid the area and the shopping centre car park has been closed.

Eight shots were reportedly fired in the attack, and video from the scene show a man and woman being stretchered away to waiting ambulances.

Police are urging anyone with information about the attack to come forward.
